This is why people are starting to add turmeric and coconut oil to their morning coffee

You may have already tried turmeric pumpkin spice lattes and golden milk lattes, but in case you are still looking for a caffeinated drink to jumpstart your day with, consider trying this warm and spicy awakening coffee.

Contrary to popular belief, turmeric doesn’t only blend with savory dishes like meats and stews. As a matter of fact, it melds well with caffeinated beverages, too. Before we go into details regarding this awakening coffee, let`s discuss turmeric and its health benefits first.

Turmeric`s Benefits

Turmeric contains curcumin, a substance with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Most studies done on turmeric used extracts with large amounts of curcumin.  Unfortunately, the curcumin content of turmeric is only 3 percent by weight. To boost its bioavailability, combine turmeric with black pepper which has been shown to increase absorption of curcumin by 2000%.

Curcumin is a very strong anti-inflammatory agent; it is so potent that its effectiveness is even greater than some of the most common anti-inflammatory drugs on the market. Many studies have shown that its anti-inflammatory activity is superior to pharmaceutical drugs, plus without the side effects.

As mentioned above, curcumin also possesses strong antioxidant properties.  As such, it blocks free radicals and then stimulate body`s natural antioxidant mechanisms.

Curcumin is known to boost BDNF levels, which in turn stimulates the growth of new neurons and combats different degenerative processes in the brain, such as depression and Alzheimer`s disease.

The list of turmeric`s health benefits doesn’t end here, though.  Turmeric and its active ingredient have been also found to lower the risk of heart disease, prevent and treat cancer, treat the symptoms of arthritis, fight age-related chronic diseases, and many more.

Now, let`s go back to the morning coffee recipe which gets its specific flavor from the turmeric content.  It also contains coconut oil and coconut milk, both of which create the perfect flavor and creamy texture. In addition to this, coconut milk boosts energy too, helping you go through the day much easier.

Given that this coffee is packed with nutrients and it`s calorie-dense, you can drink it for breakfast or combine it with some source of protein, such as egg muffin.  In case you still feel hungry after drinking it, feel free to up the coconut oil content of the drink.

While the original recipe is sweetener-free, you are allowed to add some maple syrup or raw honey in case you cannot stand the spice and need something sweet to level it out.
