Alzheimer’s patients have almost immediate brain improvements after eating 4 tablespoons of coconut oil, study shows

When someone hears the word “dementia”, they immediately think of “memory loss”. Losing memory is indeed one of the major features of dementia, but those afflicted with either dementia or Alzheimer`s also suffer from a wide array of cognitive impairments, all of which make problem-solving, thinking, and communication tasks very difficult.

Sadly, most forms of dementia are not treatable, meaning that prevention is of utmost importance, particularly if dementia or Alzheimer`s runs in the family. The good news is that researchers have revealed the promising effects of one all-natural ingredient, which points to more efficient prevention and notably enhanced cognitive function after a diagnosis.

Study: Medium-Chain Triglycerides and Alzheimer’s Disease

A 2004 study included 15 people with Alzheimer`s and 5 with amnesty cognitive impairment. The team of researchers tested the effects of 40mL of MTC`s (medium-chain triglycerides) after fasting from 8 pm the night prior. They tested the effects by comparing them with a placebo group.

It was found that consuming MCT led to notably improved cognitive function 90 minutes after, including the paragraph recall. The participants who consumed MCTs performed far better in many memory and recall tests.  Additionally, the blood test showed a significant increase in  beta-hydroxybutyrate levels,  which works to protect the brain from toxins.

It is worth noting that not only did MCTs improve cognitive function in those with dementia, but they also protected their brain from detrimental chemicals and toxins.  The best thing is that you can reap the benefits of MCTs through a very common natural ingredient.

Can Coconut Oil Help Prevent Dementia?

Those concerned about consuming oils regularly should understand that the MCTs like those found in coconut oil, have been shown to positively affect weight loss, unlike other oils. Coconut oil contains up to 62 percent of MCTs and works as an amazing source of these beneficial fats.  Still, many people opt for pure MCT oil which can be purchased in any natural health store.

In order to get the same results as the study`s participants, one diagnosed with dementia would have to eat about four tablespoons of coconut oil daily. While this may seem unmanageable, by cooking with it instead of vegetable oils, mixing it in your coffee, or adding it to your smoothies, is completely doable. Even a smaller dosage can help a healthy individual improve their cognitive function and prevent dementia.

Additional Tips on How to Prevent Alzheimer`s

1. Regular Exercise

Exercising on a regular basis helps reduce the risk of Alzheimer`s by 50%, according to the Alzheimer`s Research & Prevention Foundation. It also helps slow down further decline in those who have already been diagnosed. It works by stimulating brain`s ability to maintain old connections and form new ones.

2. Social Engagement

Staying socially engaged has been shown to prevent Alzheimer`s and dementia, so making and keeping a strong networks of friends is highly recommended.  This is not difficult at all, though! All you have to do is to join a club or some social group, volunteer, make a weekly date with your friend,  get the know your neighbors, take group classes, or connect to other people via social networks.

3. Healthy Diet

Adjusting your eating habits can go a long way in reducing inflammation, protecting the brain, and preventing dementia.  Here are a few tips on how to do this:

  • Cut down on sugar
  • Avoid trans fats
  • Enjoy a Mediterranean diet
  • Get plenty of omega-3 fats
  • Stock up on fruits and veggies
  • Consume tea regularly, especially green tea
  • Cook at home more often

There are a few supplements that can help preserve brain help, such as vitamin D, vitamin B12, fish oil, and folic acid.

4. Mental Stimulation

People who keep on learning new things and stimulating their brain are at lower risk of developing Alzheimer`s disease and dementia. Here are a few things you can do to stimulate your brain:

  • Learn something new ( foreign language or a playing a musical instrument)
  • Practice memorization
  • Practice the 5 W’s by keeping a Who, What, Where, When, and Why” list of your daily experiences
  • Enjoy strategy games, puzzles, and riddles

Activities that involve multiple tasks or require interaction and organization provide the optimal protection.

5. Quality Sleep

A recent research shows that disrupted sleep is not a only a symptom of Alzheimer`s, but a potential risk factor, too.  So, if sleep deprivation is affecting your mood, you can be at greater risk of developing Alzheimer`s disease.

Sleep Tips:

  • Get screened for sleep apnea
  • Set up a regular sleep schedule
  • Be smart about napping ( if insomnia is a problem for you, avoid napping)
  • Set the mood
  • Create a relaxing bedtime ritual ( enjoying a hot bath or doing some stretches)
Needless to say, make sure you get at least 8 hours of sleep per night.

6. Stress Management

Chronic stress can affect the brain in many different ways, leading to hampered nerve cell growth and increased risk for Alzheimer`s disease and dementia. The good news is that there are many ways to manage stress and minimize its effects!

  • Breathe! ( combat your stress with deep, abdominal breathing)
  • Nourish inner peace (prayer, meditation, religious practice, yoga, reflection)
  • Schedule daily relaxation activities ( walking your dog, taking a soothing bath, or listening to music)
  • Keep your sense of humor

What Eating Just 1 Ounce of Coconut Oil Per Day Does to Your Weight Over the Long Term

Top 10 Health Benefits of Coconut Oil

1. Coconut Oil Contains a Unique Combination of Fatty Acids With Powerful Medicinal Properties

Coconut oil has been scrutinized and demonized earlier as it contains saturated fat. As a matter of fact, coconut oil is one of the richest sources of saturated fat, with about 90 percent of the fats in it being saturated.

Recent data shows that saturated fats are not harmful as they were believed to be earlier. Multiple studies that involve hundreds of participants prove that the idea of coconut oil being artery-clogging oil is nothing but a myth.

It is worth noting that the saturated fats in coconut oil are not the same as those in cheese or steak. On the other hand, coconut oil contains MCTs, fatty acids of a medium length.  The majority of fats in the diet are long-chain fatty acids, but the medium-chain fats in coconut oil are metabolized in different way.

They go directly to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are either utilized as source energy or converted into ketone bodies, which have therapeutic effects on Alzheimer`s and epilepsy.

2. Populations That Eat a LOT of Coconut Are Among The Healthiest People on The Planet

Coconut is an exotic food in the Western world, and is mostly consumed by health conscious individuals.  But, in some regions, coconut is a staple that people have been fed on for many generations.  Tokelauans which live in the South Pacific are a good example of such a population.  Up to 60 percent of their calories come from coconuts, and these people are in great health, with no evidence of heart disease whatsoever.

3. Coconut Oil Can Increase Your Energy Expenditure, Helping You Burn More Fat

At this point, obesity is one of the major health problems worldwide. Although most people believe that obesity is a matter of calories, it turns out that the sources of the calorie intake are the key. Different foods impact our bodies and hormones differently.  MCTs in coconut oil can boost energy expenditure as opposed to the same amount of calories that come from longer chain fats.  According to one study, 15-30 grams of MTCs daily increased the 24-hour energy expenditure by 5 percent.

4. The Lauric Acid in Coconut Oil Can Kill Bacteria, Viruses and Fungi, Helping to Stave Off Infections

Lauric acid makes up to 50 percent of the fatty acids present in coconut oil. When digested, coconut oil forms monolaurin, a monoglyceride. Both lauric acid and monolaurin have the ability to kill of detrimental pathogens, such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses. For instance, they have been shown to kill of Staphylococcus Aureus and Candida Albicans.

5. Coconut Oil Can Kill Your Hunger, Making You Eat Less Without Even Trying

Coconut oil has the ability to reduce hunger, and this ability is associated to the way in which fatty acids are metabolized. In one study 6 participants were given medium and long chain triglycerides in varying amounts. Those eating the most medium chain triglycerides ate 256 fewer calories daily. Another study involving 14 participants found that those who ate the most MCTs for breakfast ate fewer calories for lunch.

6. The Fatty Acids in Coconut Oil Are Turned into Ketones, Which Can Reduce Seizures

The best known application of the ketogenic diet is treating epilepsy in children. This diet is based on low carbohydrate intake and high fat intake, which leads to elevated concentrations of ketone bodies in the bloodstream.  This diet has been also shown to reduce the rate of seizures in children with epilepsy, even those who didn’t notice any improvement with various drugs.  Given that MCTs in coconut oil are sent to the liver and converted into ketone bodies, they are frequently used to treat epilepsy to induce ketosis.

7. Coconut Oil Can Improve Blood Cholesterol Levels and May Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease

As already discussed, coconut oil is packed with saturated fats which don’t affect the blood lipid profile. They actually increase good cholesterol and alter the bad one, turning it into a benign subtype. A study on 40 women has shown that coconut oil reduced total and bad cholesterol while increasing the good one as opposed to soybean oil.

8. Coconut Oil Can Protect Hair Against Damage, Moisturize Skin and Function as Sunscreen

Interestingly, you can reap coconut oil`s benefits without ingesting it! Manu people are using to improve the health of their hair and skin. It has been scientifically shown that those with dry skin can benefit from topical application of coconut oil, as it improves the moisture and lipid content of their skin.

It also protects against hair damage and works as natural sunscreen, inhibiting about 20 percent the sun`s ultraviolet rays. Ultimately, many people use it as mouthwash in order to kill of detrimental bacteria and reduce bad breath.

9. The Fatty Acids in Coconut Oil Can Boost Brain Function in Alzheimer’s Patients

Alzheimer`s is one of the most common causes of dementia, affecting elderly people in most cases. Alzheimer`s patients have a reduced ability to utilize glucose for energy in specific parts of the brain. Ketone bodies have been shown to supply energy for the brain, working as alternative energy source for abnormal cells. According to a 2006 study, consumption of MCTs led to improvement in brain function in Alzheimer`s patients.

10. Coconut Oil Can Help You Lose Fat, Especially The Dangerous Fat in Your Abdominal Cavity

Due to its ability to reduce appetite and stimulate fat burning, it`s no wonder that coconut oil can promote weight loss, too.  It is particularly effective in reducing abdominal fat, which affects the abdominal cavity and surrounding organs. This type of fat is the most dangerous and is linked to most Western diseases.

Waist circumference is a solid marker for the amount of fat in the abdominal cavity. According to a study involving 40 women with abdominal fat, supplementing with 1 oz of coconut oil daily led to notable reduction in waist circumference in the period of twelve weeks. Another study has also shown that an ounce of coconut oil daily led to notable reduction in waist circumference in 20 obese individuals.

This is why people are starting to add turmeric and coconut oil to their morning coffee

You may have already tried turmeric pumpkin spice lattes and golden milk lattes, but in case you are still looking for a caffeinated drink to jumpstart your day with, consider trying this warm and spicy awakening coffee.

Contrary to popular belief, turmeric doesn’t only blend with savory dishes like meats and stews. As a matter of fact, it melds well with caffeinated beverages, too. Before we go into details regarding this awakening coffee, let`s discuss turmeric and its health benefits first.

Turmeric`s Benefits

Turmeric contains curcumin, a substance with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Most studies done on turmeric used extracts with large amounts of curcumin.  Unfortunately, the curcumin content of turmeric is only 3 percent by weight. To boost its bioavailability, combine turmeric with black pepper which has been shown to increase absorption of curcumin by 2000%.

Curcumin is a very strong anti-inflammatory agent; it is so potent that its effectiveness is even greater than some of the most common anti-inflammatory drugs on the market. Many studies have shown that its anti-inflammatory activity is superior to pharmaceutical drugs, plus without the side effects.

As mentioned above, curcumin also possesses strong antioxidant properties.  As such, it blocks free radicals and then stimulate body`s natural antioxidant mechanisms.

Curcumin is known to boost BDNF levels, which in turn stimulates the growth of new neurons and combats different degenerative processes in the brain, such as depression and Alzheimer`s disease.

The list of turmeric`s health benefits doesn’t end here, though.  Turmeric and its active ingredient have been also found to lower the risk of heart disease, prevent and treat cancer, treat the symptoms of arthritis, fight age-related chronic diseases, and many more.

Now, let`s go back to the morning coffee recipe which gets its specific flavor from the turmeric content.  It also contains coconut oil and coconut milk, both of which create the perfect flavor and creamy texture. In addition to this, coconut milk boosts energy too, helping you go through the day much easier.

Given that this coffee is packed with nutrients and it`s calorie-dense, you can drink it for breakfast or combine it with some source of protein, such as egg muffin.  In case you still feel hungry after drinking it, feel free to up the coconut oil content of the drink.

While the original recipe is sweetener-free, you are allowed to add some maple syrup or raw honey in case you cannot stand the spice and need something sweet to level it out.

4-Ingredient Awakening Coffee

Total Time: 5 Mins
Prep Time: 2 Mins
Cook Time: 3 Mins
Serves: 1 8 oz Coffee

Ingredients:

  • 4 oz. coconut milk
  • 4 oz. brewed strong coffee or espresso
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil melted
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • Maple syrup or raw honey ( optional)

Instructions:

Add the coconut milk, coffee, melted coconut oil, and turmeric to a blender. Blend until foamy.
Note:  It is recommended to use a measuring spoon when adding turmeric to the blender as it will stain anything and needs to be handled carefully.

This DIY coconut-infused deodorant is so pure that you can literally eat it!

Have you noticed that many things that were once believed to be complicated turn out to be extremely simple, yet most people are unaware of their simplicity? The case for deodorant is one of the best examples.

Nearly all women`s deodorants are antiperspirants that are packed with aluminum.   Men`s deodorant are also full with chemicals and propylene glycol, also known as antifreeze.  Ultimately, many natural deodorants simply don’t work and make one itch.

Do Antiperspirants Actually Cause Cancer?

It has been scientifically shown that antiperspirants block lymph nodes that drain both the breast tissue and the chest.

Clogged lymph nodes are a serious issue, as these nodes are in charge of carrying nutrients and oxygen to the cells as well as of eliminating waste products such as carbon dioxide. Optimally functioning lymphatic system is the key to good health.

If you are to do an experiment to see whether natural deodorants really work, it is very likely that you will end up disappointed. First, none of them works, and second, most of them give an allergic rash under the arms. Simply put, deodorant choices will ultimately come down to:

  • Blocking the lymphatic system drainage, causing edema of the arms or even increase the risk of cancer
  • Living with allergic dermatitis
  • Looking for the most “feminine”-scented anti-freeze available
  • Going “au naturale”

What would you choose?

With this being said, it`s no wonder that making a homemade deodorant is the best option you are left with.  The recipe below is very easy and cheap, so preparing it on a regular basis will become a common practice.

The good news is that this natural deodorant smells great, it is free of chemicals, and it uses only three common ingredients. It takes a minute for complete preparation and it works great.

DIY Natural Deodorant

Coconut oil is an all-natural substance that eliminates bad odor and prevents it from occurring. Consequently, it leaves you smelling heavenly! What`s more, it possesses antifungal and antibacterial properties that combat bad, armpit bacteria.

Materials and Ingredients:

  • Glass container or a small mason jar
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp baking soda
  • 2 tbsp arrowroot or cornstarch
  • A few drops of your favorite essential oil ( optional)

Instructions:

  • Put the coconut oil in the microwave for a few seconds so that it softens a bit
  • Stir in the baking soda and arrowroot
  • Mix all the ingredients well and scoop into the container

Optional

  • Add the essential oil of choice, while the coconut oil alone still gives a nice scent
  • Male individuals are recommended to add an antibacterial essential oil, such as sage, tea tree, or peppermint oil
  • For further bacteria-regulating power, add a capsule of a probiotic ( 1-2 capsules per batch of deodorant)
  • Those who are sensitive to baking soda can decrease the amount of baking soda and increase the amount of arrowroot
  • Let the mixture cool at room temperature, preferably a day

Eat 2 tbsp of coconut oil twice a day for 60 days and this will happen to your brain

According to the Alzheimer`s Association`s 2011 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures, currently 5.4 million Americans have Alzheimer`s disease.

While an estimate, this number will jump to 16 million by 2050 and in the next years this disease will affect 1 in 4 Americans, which is even more than the rate of obesity and diabetes at the moment.

Given that there are only a few treatments available, most of which are rarely effective, early detection and prevention became extremely important!

It turns out that something as simple as a tablespoon of peanut butter and a ruler could be used to diagnose the disease in its early stages. As reported by Medical News Today:

“Jennifer Stamps, a graduate student in the University of Florida (UF) McKnight Brain Institute Center for Smell and Taste, and her colleagues reported the findings of a small pilot study in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences.

Stamps came up with the idea of using peanut butter to test for smell sensitivity while she was working with Dr. Kenneth Heilman, one of the world’s best known behavioral neurologists, from the UF College of Medicine’s department of neurology.

…The ability to smell is associated with the first cranial nerve and is often one of the first things to be affected in cognitive decline… She thought of peanut butter because, she said, it is a ‘pure odorant’ that is only detected by the olfactory nerve and is easy to access.”

This study tested the ability to smell of 24 patients with mild cognitive impairment. The patient had to close their eyes and mouth and hold one nostril close while breathing through the other. The clinician measured the distance between the open nostril and the peanut butter with the help of a ruler, identifying the distance at which the patient had the ability to detect the smell. The procedure was done with the other nostril after a 90 second delay.

It has been found that patients diagnosed with an early stage of Alzheimer`s disease underwent a notable difference in their ability to detect the smell between the two nostrils. According to the report:

“[T]he left nostril was impaired and did not detect the smell until it was an average of 10 cm closer to the nose than the right nostril had made the detection in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

This was not the case in patients with other kinds of dementia; instead, these patients had either no differences in odor detection between nostrils or the right nostril was worse at detecting odor than the left one.”

Benefits of Coconut Oil Make Headlines Again

Florida researchers are currently investigating whether coconut oil can be beneficial when it comes to this disease. Three years ago, Dr. Mary Newport`s theory suggested that ketone bodies offer benefits in the battle against Alzheimer`s disease.

Presently, this theory is being used to set up the first clinical trial of this kind and the research is being done at USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute.

For the purpose of this study, 64 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer`s were included to evaluate the effects of coconut oil on the disease. As reported by CTV News:

“While there is currently no clinical data showing the benefits of coconut oil on the prevention and treatment of dementia, Newport — whose husband Steve was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 51 — said she began to see improvements after starting him on four teaspoons of coconut oil per day.

‘Before the coconut oil, he could not tie his shoes. His weird slow gait… That improved. He walked normally and he was able to start running again.

He was able to start reading again, his conversation improved dramatically and then over several months we saw improvements in his memory,’ Newport said. Prior to starting him on coconut oil, Newport said none of the existing medications were working.”

Coconut Oil Appears to Be an Ideal Brain Food

Carbs/ sugar and fat are the only types of fuel the body can turn into energy.  Ketones are produced by the body during the conversion of fat into energy.  The major source of ketone bodies are the medium-chain triglycerides, found in coconut oil.

These triglycerides are fats which are not processed by the body in the same way as long-chain triglycerides.  Typically, a fat taken into the body must be mixed with the bile before it can be broken down into the digestive system.

On the other hand, medium-chain triglycerides go straight to the liver, which turns the oil into ketones, which are immediately released into the bloodstream and then transported to the brain.

Even though the body loves glucose and is happy running in this type of primary fuel, it has been found that ketone bodies help restore neurons and nerve function in the body. The mechanism of this MCT-ketone metabolism appears to be that the body treats MCTs as carbohydrates, allowing the ketone energy to hit the bloodstream without insulin spike which typically occurs when carbs enter the system.

How Much Coconut Oil Might You Need?

According to Dr. Newport`s assessments, only two tablespoons of coconut oil, which is 35 ml or seven level teaspoons,  supply the body with 20 grams of MCT, amount which has been found to prevent against degenerative neurological disease and to treat already established case.

Note that not all people tolerate coconut oil the same way, which means that you need to start slowly and work your way to these therapeutic levels. The best would be to start with one teaspoon along with food and then gradually increase the amount until you are able to tolerate four tablespoons.

Low-Fat Craze Has Likely Contributed to Dramatic Rise in Alzheimer’s

Dr. David Perlmutter believes that avoiding fat and carbohydrates are the main causes of Alzheimer`s epidemics, which is preventable disease, influenced by lifestyle factors. Dr. Perlmutter`s book provides a strong argument for removing grains from your diet to protect the brain. As Amanda Smith, Medical Director at University of South Florida (USF) Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute told CTV News:

“The pharmaceutical industry is in this — of course to make money for their companies, and of course they want to help people theoretically — but at the end of the day it is about dollars and cents, and so money gets invested in things that are new or patentable rather than things that are sitting on the shelf already.”

Intermittent Fasting Can Also Increase Ketone Production

Intermittent fasting is one of the ways to boost ketone production. It involves timing of meals, allowing the body to enter the fat-burning process. For optimal results, the length of the fast must be at least 16 hours, meaning that you should eat only between the hours of 11 am until 7 pm or noon until 8pm.

The best would be to avoid eating anything for three hours before bedtime and then extend the time before you have breakfast to the point you have skipped breakfast and have the first meal at lunch.

Did you know you can heal your thyroid with coconut oil? Just Do this

These days majority of Americans suffer from symptoms like weight gain, loss of libido, ringing in the ears, hair loss, brittle nails, constipation, fatigue, sensitivity to cold, headaches, insomnia, dry skin, cold hands and feet, frequent infections, dizziness, hoarse voice, and joint aches.

Nearly 65% of the American population is overweight, 27% is clinically obese.  It has been scientifically shown that the underlying cause of weight issues, particularly among women, is an underactive thyroid.

Since coconut oil is saturated and very stable fat, the body is not hampered with oxidative stress.  Unlike vegetable oils, it doesn’t require the enzyme stress, preventing T4 to T3 hormone conversion.  Being stable oil is not the only reason for this, though.  It is processed differently in the body and doesn’t need to be broken down with assistance of enzyme-dependent processes.

In addition to this, given that the liver is the place where damage from oxidized and rancid oils as well as a conversion of T4 to T3 occurs, removing long-chain fats from the diet and swapping them from medium-chain fats found in coconut oil, may eventually help rebuild cell membranes and increase enzyme production.

Although further research on the topic needs to be done, people replacing polyunsaturated oils with coconut oil are reporting many positive effects. For instance, Donna  and Sharon have undergone notable improvements in her thyroid health.

“I’ve been on coconut oil since September 2002 and, although, that doesn’t seem like long, it has changed my life and the lives of my family and friends. My weight actually went UP when I started on coconut oil but I felt so GREAT! Being hypothyroid, I was on Synthroid and Cytomel and had been for years, but with inconsistent results and feeling worse. Other changes besides the addition of coconut oil were the complete removal of soy (and that is a major challenge in itself!), all trans fatty acids, no refined sugar, and organ cleanses seasonally.

My thyroid meds were discontinued with my doctor’s knowledge as I was getting too energetic and having trouble sleeping! [Imagine], from being a ‘sleepaholic’ couch potato that was cold! My weight stayed steady until the last three weeks and it has now started the downward move. My goal was health and just believed the weight would come off when I found the right diet and exercise routine that my life was comfortable with. I’ve tried removing the coconut oil but my energy drops and I don’t feel as good,” Donna explains.

Furthermore, Sharon writes the following in the coconut-info discussion group:

“I have had the same problem with sluggish metabolism and weight gain since having children. Even a no-calorie diet (fast) for 5 days did not work. As soon as I started taking Virgin Coconut Oil, the fat began to melt and I have lost 20 pounds. Over the same period of time, my 13-year-old daughter who was very chubby and very worried about it, but could not bring up the self-control to renounce some of her favorite fatty foods, lost about 10 pounds. She now has the perfect figure, to her great joy! Pants she was bulging out of a year ago hang loose on her!”
