7 Ways to Dye your Hair Naturally

Coffee
Coffee works wonders for going darker, making your hair chocolate-like and undamaged. All you have to do is to make a strong coffee and allow it to cool down and then mix one cup with a couple cups of leave-in conditioner and two tablespoons of coffee grounds.

Another option is to shampoo the hair and then pour coffee over. Let it work for twenty minutes before rinsing it off with apple cider vinegar and warm water.

Tea
Tea works for natural hair color given that it is less strong than coffee. Black tea is a good way to cover gray hairs and go darker while teas like chamomile work for blondes and rooibos for redheads.

You should use three to five teabags for two cups of water and use them alone or mixed with a conditioner.  Mix in fresh or dried sage if you are trying to cover gray hairs.  Let it work overnight if you want more color. Ultimately, rinse with warm water.

Herbs
You can use many different herbs, depending on the color you want to get.

Red:  Use calendula, marigold, rosehips, and hibiscus to deepen the red or add highlights. Simmer the herbs for half an hour, strain and cool down. Pour onto the hair and air dry.

Brunette/Dark: Try rosemary, nettle, and sage. Again, simmer the herbs for half an hour and then strain and cool down. Brush through the hair and leave it on for one hour.

Blonde: Chamomile, calendula, marigold, saffron, and sunflower petals all work here. Rhubarb root can also be added to fight gray hairs.  The procedure is the same as with the herbs above.

Beet and Carrot Juice
Beet and carrot juice are an effective way to add red tints to your color. For reddish-orange use more carrot and for more red use more beet juice.

Pour a cup of the juice onto your hair, alone or mixed with coconut oil. Wrap your hair and let the juice work for an hour. Rinse it off and finish with apple cider vinegar spray.

Henna
The leaves of this plant have natural pigment which works wonders for your hair. It is ideal for brunettes and redheads since it creates a red-orange color. It is recommended to mix it with chamomile in order to soften the paste.

Mix a cup of henna powder with two cups of lemon juice and leave it for 4-6 hours. Apply onto the hair, wrap with plastic wrap and let it work for at least 3 hours before washing it off.

Lemon Juice
Due to its whitening properties, lemon juice is best used for highlights. Spray the juice and brush through the hair. Let it work for a few hours and repeat several times since it works very slowly.

Walnut Shells
Walnuts shells are best used for a dark brown color. Simply crush them and boil for half an hour. Let it cool down, strain, and apply onto the hair. Leave it on for an hour before rinsing it off.

20 Great Habits for Stronger and Healthier Hair

Every woman wishes for a strong, shiny, and healthy hair, but most of the regular care practices are a downturn in keeping the hair healthy. Some of these things we do automatically, but they do affect the health of our hair.  Here are 20 great habits for stronger and healthier hair!

1. Moisten the hair with plain white vinegar after using shampoo and let it work for a few minutes before washing. Your hair will be much shinier after the very first use.

2. Use a natural avocado hair mask one a month

3. Wash the hair with egg yolks instead of shampoo. As unusual as it seems, raw egg yolks moisturize the hair much better than most commercial products.

4. Avoid washing the hair too often as this practice removes the oil from the scalp which is needed for nutrition and growth.

5. Use a sulfate-free shampoo as sulfate tends to deprive the hair of its moisture.

6. Braiding the hair before bed gives natural waves in the morning and prevents the hair from tangling and breakage.

7. Massage the scalp with a wooden brush on a daily basis to increase blood flow in this area and stimulate hair growth.

8. Protect the hair from the sun by using sunscreens and summer hair styling products which protect the hair from salt water and chlorine.

9. Instead of blow drying the hair, let it dry naturally as often as possible.

10. Dry the hair before bedtime as wet hair is more prone to breakage.

11. Argan oil is highly beneficial for the hair! Use it as a conditioner or for split ends and dry scalp

12. Avoid curling irons and hot straighteners as high temperatures weaken the hair. In case you must use any, make sure you use a spray-in heat protectant, too.

13. Don’t bleach or dye your hair as they contain chemicals like ammonia, which has been shown to damage the hair and burn the scalp.

14. Never brush the hair when it is wet since this makes it prone to breakage. Use a comb right after applying a hair conditioner.

15. Use a silk or satin pillowcase for the bed. These materials are safer for the hair as they don’t catch it like other pillowcases do when you toss and turn.

16. Consume biotin to stimulate hair growth and skin regeneration.

17. If your hair is prone to split ends, trim it every 8 weeks to keep it strong and healthy.

18. Take care of your hair with natural masks which are high in vitamins and beneficial oils.

19. Eat well as the hair is nourished by the food you eat. If your diet lacks natural fats, vitamins, and protein, your hair will suffer.

20. Relax! Stress is one of the most damaging things for the hair. No matter how much you nourish your hair, stress will affect the hair and it will never be as shiny as it could be.

Thinning hair? 6 science-backed fruits that could help prevent hair loss

Hair loss is one of the most common side effects of aging and is quite difficult to deal with.  As reported by the American Hair Loss Association ( AHLA),  “Male pattern baldness (MPB) accounts for more than 95% of hair loss in men. By the age of thirty-five two-thirds of American men will experience some degree of appreciable hair loss, and by the age of fifty approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair.” And hair loss isn’t a strictly male disease. They also add that “Women actually make up forty percent of American hair loss sufferers.”

However, these staggering percentages don’t mean that everyone needs to be bald or live with thinning hair.  There are certain treatments, most of which are quite aggressive though, including laser treatments, hair restoration surgery, or transplants.  But, there are natural alternative available, which are as effective but completely safe to use.

The Most Common Causes of Hair Loss

The reasons for hair loss range from pregnancy or menopause in women and genetics to serious health issues in men.  Some of the conditions which may trigger thinning include stress, hypertension, and high cholesterol levels.

However, there is no need to worry too much about it, as baldness doesn’t happen in a matter of days of weeks.  This process typically takes about 15 years, which gives you enough time to make some lifestyle changes to reverse the condition.  For instance, adding a few fruits in your daily diet can slow down this process and stimulate hair growth!

Fruit & The Science Behind Why They Can Help Your Hair Grow Back

There isn’t cure for baldness yet as science hasn’t come up with a plan on how to trigger the follicle growing phase, which is the cause of hair loss in the first place.

As found by researchers at Columbia University, the enzyme called Janus Kinase ( JAK) is ‘suspended in a resting phase’ in the hair follicle, inhibiting growth. They have found that blocking these enzymes can trigger the hair follicle to grow robustly once more.

JAK enzymes are found in berries and other fruits. The fruits tested by the New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Researching are found to contain the highest concentration of ellagic acid, the known inhibitor of kinases. Below you have the top fruits capable of blocking the enzyme and stimulating hair growth:

6 Top Fruits For Hair Growth

4 ways apple cider vinegar can completely change your hair

While apple cider vinegar is mostly used as an addition to food, it is also extremely popular in the natural health community. As a matter of fact, ACV has the ability to do many things that you never expected, such as being used as hair care product.   Applying ACV onto your hair provides numerous hair health benefits! Among them are:

1. Balancing pH Levels

ACV is very effective at balancing the pH level of our hair. The scalp and hair produce sebum, an oil-like substance which allows the hair`s environment to have a pH level of between 4.5 and 5.5.  Such level contains sufficient acidity to protect the scalp from bacterial and fungal growth, which in turn keeps the both the scalp and hair healthy.

Many shampoos, conditioners,  and masks deprive the hair of the natural oil sebum, which minimizes the protective abilities of the scalp. Lack of sebum creates a basic environment in the hair which stimulates the growth of bacteria and fungus.

Apple cider vinegar has a low pH level, which means that it has the ability to replace the role of sebum. Regular use of apple cider vinegar as hair rinse helps replenish the levels of acidity of the scalp after using store-bought hair care products.

2. Anti-fungal and Antimicrobial Properties

It has been scientifically shown that apple cider vinegar possesses anti-fungal and antimicrobial properties, probably due to its acidity level. Apart from keeping the scalp and hair healthy, ACV also kills off bacteria which cause certain types of skin infections.  Therefore, we can conclude that apple cider vinegar is quite effective at treating scalp-related infections and diseases.

3. Improving Hair Growth

It is a well-known fact that apple cider vinegar helps improve circulation and regulate blood pressure. This is of great benefit for hair health and growth since proper circulation and blood flow to the scalp supply the hair with the needed nutrients. According to many studies, poor circulation is directly linked to hair loss and baldness.

According to a study done in Japan, the blood flow in the scalps in men with male pattern baldness was 2.6 times lower than the one of the control group who wasn’t diagnosed with this condition.  Many studies done by hair-care companies have also shown that poor circulation leads to hair loss.

4. Improving Curls

As reported by The Curl Manual, a website specialized in natural care products for curly hair, apple cider vinegar brings a natural bounce to curly hair, due to its cleansing properties which clean the scalp and prevent “tightly coiled hair” from building up.  In addition, it has been said that ACV improves the springiness of hair, too.

How to Use Apple Cider Vinegar

To reap the hair health benefits outlined above, you need to apply it in a manner that allows it to reach each part of the hair and the scalp.  For optimal results, mix a tablespoon of ACV with a cup of water in a spray bottle and apply about half a cup of the solution per use.  Use this solution once a week and rinse well afterward.
