The turmeric you’re consuming is useless unless you take it in one of these 3 ways

Multiple studies have backed up the medicinal benefits of turmeric! Once you see the undeniable proof that turmeric indeed offers a wide array of significant health benefits, you will start incorporating it in your daily diet right away! But, before you start consuming turmeric as powerful food medicine, you should learn how to unleash its potent healing potential first.

Turmeric is related to ginger root, both of which are classified as members of the Zingiberacaea family. It has been widely used as both spice and potent medicine.

Curcumin and Curcuminoids

Diferuloylmethane, also known as curcumin is one of the three curcuminoids in turmeric, the other being desmethoxycurcumin and bis-desmethoxycurcumin. In addition to these constituents, scientists keep identifying new compounds which are located in the essential oil of this spice.

The main problem with turmeric is curcumin`s poor bioavailability. Many animal and clinical studies have found that the concentrations of curcumin in the blood plasma, peripheral tissues, and the urine, are quite low regardless of the dosage.

What is Bioavailability?

According to the Merck manual, “Bioavailability refers to the extent of and rate at which the active moiety (drug or metabolite) enters systemic circulation, thereby accessing the site of action.”

Bioavailability describes how much of the ingested substance is absorbed by the body.  Needless to say, those with low bioavailability will not be efficient enough for healing purposes.

Research Confirms Turmeric’s Low Bioavailability

Key Points:

Multiple studies on curcumin have confirmed that low blood serum levels are reached in case of oral administration. The reason behind this is that most of the orally ingested curcumin is metabolized long before it basically reaches the bloodstream.
The main factors that affect the bioavailability or serum levels of turmeric include the route of administration and method of preparation.
A good way to increase turmeric`s bioavailability is to add specific adjuvants.
Studies

A 1978 study done by by Whalstrom and Blennow has shown that when taken orally, curcumin was poorly absorbed in the gut.
A 1980 study by Ravindranath el al found that when rats were orally given 400 mg of curcumin, no trace of it was found in the heart blood.
A recent study by Yang et al found that when 10mg.kg of curcumin was administered orally, only 0.36 µg/ml of it was found in the blood serum.
A study Absorption and tissue distribution of curcumin in rats. Ravindranath et al found after orally administration of 400 mg of curcumin to rats: “only traces of the unchanged molecule were found in the liver and kidney. At 30 min, 90% of the curcumin was found in the stomach and small intestine, but only 1% was present at 24 h. [hours].”
Studies done by Whalstrom and Blennow has shown curcumin`s rapid systemic extraction from the body.  The bottom line is that turmeric indeed has a short half-life.
3 Ways To Boost The Benefits Of Turmeric!

1.     Add Black Pepper to Your Turmeric

It has been scientifically shown that black pepper works as powerful turmeric adjuvant.

Some of the key health benefits of black pepper are as follows:

  • Helps cure vertigo
  • Helps reduce cognitive malfunction and memory impairment
  • Lowers the risk of liver and cardiovascular ailments and cancer
  • Relieves asthma, nasal congestion, and sinusitis
  • Relieves dementia and Alzheimer`s

How does Black Pepper Enhance the Bioavailability of Turmeric?

According to Michael Greger, an eminent physician and professional speaker on important public health issues, “Piperine is a potent inhibitor of drug metabolism. One of the ways our liver gets rid of foreign substances is making them water-soluble so they can be more easily excreted. But this black pepper molecule inhibits that process.”

How much Black Pepper? – Not Much

“If people are given a bunch of turmeric curcumin, within an hour there’s a little bump in the level in their blood stream. We don’t see a large increase because our liver is actively trying to get rid of it. But what if the process is suppressed by taking just a quarter teaspoon’s worth of black pepper?

Then you see curcumin levels skyrocket. The same amount of curcumin consumed, but the bioavailability shoots up 2000%. Even just a little pinch of pepper—1/20th of a teaspoon—can significantly boost levels. And guess what a common ingredient in curry powder is besides turmeric? Black pepper,” says Dr. Michael Greger.

2.    Add a Healthy Fat to Turmeric

Being fat-soluble, turmeric has to be combined with a fat in order for the body to fully absorb it and reap its benefits.

As explained by Dr. Joseph Mercola,“When it doesn’t dissolve properly, curcumin has a tough time getting into the gut, which is where most of the immune system lives. “80 percent of your immune system is located in your digestive system, making a healthy gut a major focal point if you want to maintain optimal health.”

‘Another way to boost the absorption of curcumin is to consume it in the whole food, turmeric root (fresh or dried as a powder) because natural oils found in turmeric root and turmeric powder can enhance the bioavailability of curcumin seven to eight fold. When eaten with fat, curcumin can be directly absorbed into the bloodstream through the lymphatic system thereby in part bypassing the liver,’ says Dr. Michael Greiger.

3.   Heat Increases Turmeric’s Bioavailability

As explained by Dr. Sukumar, “The potent ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which, despite its power, is not easily absorbed by the body without assistance. This is where the sauté pan and a little warm oil come into play.”

The problem about the pill is that it is extremely insoluble in water.  The more efficient way to use it is to add it to your cooking more often.  Whenever you have any sauté, simply sprinkle it in to make it bio-available to you.

Summary: To Extract The Optimum Benefit When Consuming Turmeric As A Medicine

  • Increase turmeric`s bioavailability by up to 2,000 times by mixing it with freshly ground black pepper
  • Boost turmeric`s absorption and healing properties by combining it with healthy fats like ghee or coconut oil
  • Activate turmeric by using heat

What Happens When You Take Turmeric Every Day

In addition to being used for culinary purposes, turmeric keeps finding new ways to surprise researchers regarding its wide plethora of health benefits. While initially focused on anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties, recent studies show that turmeric helps improve blood sugar balance, kidney function, and cognitive function. At the same time, it has the potential to reduce the severity linked to a few forms of arthritis and some digestive disorders.

Turmeric has an exceptional nutritional profile, containing a wide array of vitamins, minerals, volatile oils, and curcuminoids.  Specifically, two teaspoons of turmeric provide 15.58 calories, 0.34 grams protein, 2.86 grams carbohydrates, 0.93 grams dietary fiber, and 0.43 grams fat.  As for the vitamins, it contains 2.16 mg choline, 1.72 mcg folate, 0.59 mcg vitamin K, 1.14 mg vitamin C, etc.  Ultimately, a 2-teaspoon serving provides  111.10 mg potassium, 8.05 mg calcium, 8.49 mg magnesium, 11.79 mg phosphorus, and solid amounts of iron, manganese, zinc, selenium, sodium, copper, and many more.

With this being said, it`s no wonder that this miraculous spice offers may different remedying powers.  Apart from anecdotal experiences, these benefits and healing properties are also backed up by science! Here are some of the miraculous healing powers of turmeric:

Fights inflammation naturally: Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is far superior to most anti-inflammatory drugs on the market in terms of reducing inflammation.

Protects the brain: Dementia, Alzheimer`s disease, and many other cognitive disorders are typically associated to a growth hormone called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). Curcumin affects the BDNF levels, which in turn delays or even reverses the deterioration of brain functions.

Protects the heart: It has been scientifically shown that curcumin lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. At the same time, it prevents blood clots from developing as well as build-ups in the arteries. By improving these cardiovascular factors, it works to protect the heart and ensure its optimal function.

Improves Digestion: Regular turmeric consumption helps prevent inflammation of the digestive tract, reduces bloating, and alleviates gas. Thanks to its ability to stimulate the gallbladder, it protects against gallbladder disease, too.

Improve the symptoms of arthritis: Being a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, turmeric reduces pain in the body, including arthritis pain. It is as effective as pharmaceutical drugs for arthritis, without the unpleasant adverse effects.

Delays aging and improves longevity: While it cannot delay time, it sure can keep you feel healthy and young regardless of the number on your birthday cake.  It is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agent that protects the hearts, prevents cancer, and protects against other diseases.

Reduces your risk of cancer:  Turmeric is one of the best preventative measures against cancer growth, which inhibits the spread of cancer, too.

This is why people are starting to add turmeric and coconut oil to their morning coffee

You may have already tried turmeric pumpkin spice lattes and golden milk lattes, but in case you are still looking for a caffeinated drink to jumpstart your day with, consider trying this warm and spicy awakening coffee.

Contrary to popular belief, turmeric doesn’t only blend with savory dishes like meats and stews. As a matter of fact, it melds well with caffeinated beverages, too. Before we go into details regarding this awakening coffee, let`s discuss turmeric and its health benefits first.

Turmeric`s Benefits

Turmeric contains curcumin, a substance with potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Most studies done on turmeric used extracts with large amounts of curcumin.  Unfortunately, the curcumin content of turmeric is only 3 percent by weight. To boost its bioavailability, combine turmeric with black pepper which has been shown to increase absorption of curcumin by 2000%.

Curcumin is a very strong anti-inflammatory agent; it is so potent that its effectiveness is even greater than some of the most common anti-inflammatory drugs on the market. Many studies have shown that its anti-inflammatory activity is superior to pharmaceutical drugs, plus without the side effects.

As mentioned above, curcumin also possesses strong antioxidant properties.  As such, it blocks free radicals and then stimulate body`s natural antioxidant mechanisms.

Curcumin is known to boost BDNF levels, which in turn stimulates the growth of new neurons and combats different degenerative processes in the brain, such as depression and Alzheimer`s disease.

The list of turmeric`s health benefits doesn’t end here, though.  Turmeric and its active ingredient have been also found to lower the risk of heart disease, prevent and treat cancer, treat the symptoms of arthritis, fight age-related chronic diseases, and many more.

Now, let`s go back to the morning coffee recipe which gets its specific flavor from the turmeric content.  It also contains coconut oil and coconut milk, both of which create the perfect flavor and creamy texture. In addition to this, coconut milk boosts energy too, helping you go through the day much easier.

Given that this coffee is packed with nutrients and it`s calorie-dense, you can drink it for breakfast or combine it with some source of protein, such as egg muffin.  In case you still feel hungry after drinking it, feel free to up the coconut oil content of the drink.

While the original recipe is sweetener-free, you are allowed to add some maple syrup or raw honey in case you cannot stand the spice and need something sweet to level it out.

Use Turmeric Before Ever Swallowing Another Ibuprofen Again

Turmeric is native to Southeast Asia and India, where it has been widely used for culinary purposes for thousands of years.  Apart from being effective in cooking, it has remained an important herb with numerous medicinal uses going back many years in Ayurvedic medicine.

When bought in fresh form, turmeric resembles ginger root, although its flesh has different color when compared to cut ginger root.  Americans are most familiar with the powdered form of turmeric, which is characterized with unique color, interesting aroma, and peppery flavor.

It is worth mentioning that turmeric has a robust nutritional profile, low calorie value, and relatively low GI. It is packed with minerals like calcium, copper, manganese, magnesium, and potassium as well as vitamins like vitamin A, B-vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D, and more. Specifically, 4, 40 grams of turmeric (2 teaspoons), provides 8.05 mg calcium, 1.82 mg iron, 8.49 mg magnesium, 11.79 mg phosphorus, 111.10 mg potassium, and 1.67 mg sodium. As for the vitamin content, the same serving offers 0.01 mg vitamin B2, 0.23 mg vitamin B3, 2.16 mg choline, 1.72 mg folate, 1.14 mg vitamin C, etc.

With this being said, it`s no wonder that this miraculous plant provides a wide array of health benefits, such as inhibiting inflammation-causing molecules, increasing the antioxidant capacity of the body,  improving brain function, relieving pain, protecting against cardiovascular disease,  preventing cancer, treating symptoms of arthritis, and many more.

A relatively recent study published study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine has come up with exciting news! Namely, this particular study has found that turmeric is an effective natural alternative to ibuprofen, a pain-killer used to treat knee osteoarthritis.  Most importantly, this spice has been shown to be even superior in terms of both its efficiency and safety.

In a Lancet review, ibuprofen was shown to be toxic to the heart as Vioxx, an anti-inflammatory drug which is banned for a few years now due to its contribution to many deaths from cardiovascular disease on an annual basis.  This is critical factor to why natural alternatives are of utmost importance, particularly when they involved spices that are known to be accessible, time-tested, and safe.

The study assessed efficiency and safety of curcuma in patients diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis. The trial was done with 109 patients with osteoarthritis who were given 800mg of ibuprofen daily or 2,000 mg of turmeric a day, over the course of six weeks.

The researchers measured pain during walking stairs and basic functions of the knee asses by time spend during 100-m walk.  The improvements were assessed in both groups and the primary outcomes were pretty much the same, with the exception of turmeric being more effective regarding the performance regarding the 100-m walk and less self-reported pain going up and down a flight of stairs.  The turmeric groups also noted less adverse effects. Ultimately, the researchers noted different trend toward a greater effect in those receiving turmeric compared to those receiving ibuprofen. Simply put, the subjects in the turmeric group experienced higher satisfaction and little or no side-effects.

Dried rhizomes from C.domestica were made into powder. The powder was extracted using ethanol and then evaporated to obtain ethanolic extract containing curcuminoids and oil. Each of the capsules of C. domestica contained up to 250 mg of curcuminoids.

How Taking Turmeric Helps Your Body Block Fat and Your Liver REMOVE Toxins as Fast as Possible

Turmeric is native in southeast India and is widely used as spice, particularly in curry.  Due to its bitter, warm taste, it`s often added in butters, cheese, mustards, and powders in order to color them and add a unique flavor.

However, apart from its use in cooking, turmeric continues to amaze researchers regarding its wide plethora of health benefits. Although once concentrated on anti-inflammatory properties, support of detoxification, and reduced cancer risk, studies done on turmeric now show that it can be also used to treat heartburn, stomach pain, intestinal gas, bloating, diarrhea, gallbladder disorders, colds, wounds, headaches, bruising, arthritis,  and many more.

While researchers once believed that in order to reap its benefits you have to take about 1-2 grams on a daily basis, as people in India do, studies now exhibit possible benefits at lower amounts.  Sometimes, even 50 mg daily over the course of a few months have been associated with the same health benefits.

Top Five Reasons to Add Turmeric to Your Diet

1. Fat Blocker / Liver Detoxifier

Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, acts as fat blocker, while boosting liver function. It works by suppressing blood vessels used in the formation of fat tissue.  It also produces enzymes which break down toxins in the system, which in turn detoxifies the liver.

2. Boosts Immune System

Turmeric contains lipopolysaccharide, a substance which is known to stimulate the immune system.  It also possesses antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, which boost immunity and protect from various ailments. This is why turmeric is an amazing addition to your daily routine, particularly during stressful times and when you`re feeling unwell.

3. Reduces Inflammation

The volatile oil content of turmeric has exhibited notable anti-inflammatory activity in many different experimental models. Curcumin is even more powerful than its volatile oil, which has been found to be comparable to powerful drugs like hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone, and over-the-counter inflammatory agents like Motrin.  While OTC or prescription drugs are linked to various toxic effects, turmeric produces no toxicity. It is also worth mentioning that curcumin has been found to work against inflammatory diseases like arthritis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

4. Reduces Cholesterol Levels

Curcumin acts as messaging molecule that communicates with genes in the liver, stimulating the production of mRNA that control the formation of receptors of LDL cholesterol.  With more of these receptors, liver cells are capable of clearing out more LDL-cholesterol from the body. In brief, turmeric possesses powerful cholesterol-lowering properties.

5. Cancer Prevention

Due to its antioxidant properties, curcumin protects colon cells from free radicals which may damage cellular DNA. It also inhibits the spread of cancer cells through the body by destroying the mutated cancerous cells.  It has been scientifically shown that turmeric is potent enough to stop the growth of already existing cancer and kill off cancer cells. As a matter of fact, many researchers believe that turmeric is one of the most powerful protective agents against radiation-induced tumors.

Top Five Ways to add Turmeric to Your Diet:

1. Eggs

Turmeric and eggs go well together, so try adding more of this spice to your hard-boiled, over-easy, scrambled, omelet, or poached eggs.

2. Veggies

Add turmeric to your veggies just like you normally do with salt and pepper. It goes great on cooked greens, broccoli, cauliflower, and sweet potatoes.

3. Yellow Mustard

Turmeric gives a unique, yellow color to mustard. Use it as condiment and add to salad dressings along with vinegar and extra virgin olive oil.

4. Tea

To make a turmeric tea, boil water and add 2 ½ teaspoons of turmeric, raw honey, and fresh lemon juice. Feel free to use other delicious additions, such as black pepper, ginger, or cinnamon.

5. Smoothie

Simply add half a teaspoon or teaspoon of turmeric to your favorite smoothie.  A tasty combination to try out is 1 cup frozen mango, 1 cup frozen pineapple, a couple handfuls of spinach or kale, 2 cups of coconut or almond milk, and a bit of ginger.

In addition to this, it has been found that coconut oil stimulates blood flow to painful muscles and joints, which in turn helps them heal.

2. Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper can be used as both pain reliever and blood flow stimulant. Capsaicin in hot peppers basically tricks the brain into believing that the area we have applied it on is hot, which in turn blinds the nerves. Capsaicin provides relief from muscle soreness, lower back pain, and arthritis.

3. Ginger and Turmeric

Both ginger and turmeric act as strong anti-inflammatory agents and have been long used to treat rheumatoid arthritis.

Ginger is a time-tested remedy for pain of many kinds including lower back pain, stomach pain, and chest pain. It has been shown that it also provides relief of rheumatoid arthritis.

The exact method for taking turmeric to help relieve sciatica pain

At this point, it is a well-known fact that sciatica, often referred to as low back pain, is not a disease but rather a symptom of some health problems.

Injury of the sciatic nerve, which is responsible for sensation in almost all parts of the leg, is the key cause of low back pain or sciatica.

Lumber stenosis, piriformis syndrome, tumors, pelvic injuries, and herniated disc are the most common causes of this issue, while risk factors which contribute to its development include poor lifestyle habits, physical inactivity, strenuous physical activity, mental stress, age, etc.

Most sciatica sufferers turn to anti-depressants, corticosteroids, muscle relaxants, and therapeutics to alleviate the pain, but the prevalence rates are still constantly on the rise.  These days, some people choose to go the more natural route by practicing yoga or making visits to a chiropractor.

But, did you know that recent studies show that herbs can serve as another natural method for alleviating sciatica pain.

Reversing Sciatica Pain

Experts believe that cucumin, turmeric`s active ingredient, can be used as tonic to reduce chronic inflammation. For optimal results, it is recommended to heat the spice in milk and coconut oil along with a bit of pepper.

Black pepper contains piperine, a compound that promotes better bioavailability.  Another way to ensure optimal absorption os to take enteric-coated capsules with piperine.

To reap turmeric`s benefits, consume it as tea, use it for cooking, or simply apply it as paste onto the affected area.

The aforementioned curcumin is a polyphenolic compound with potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-cancer properties. As such, it has the ability to cure many chronic health conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, metabolic diseases, pulmonary diseases, and tumors.

Turmeric Lowers Levels of Certain Inflammation-Fueling Enzymes

Turmeric`s ability to relieve sciatica pain and swelling is attributed to its capacity to lower the levels of some inflammation-fueling enzymes.  To alleviate pain and inflammation, the suggested dosage for an average adult is 300 mg of turmeric, taken three times daily.

The dosage should be adjusted in case you are taking medications. It is also worth mentioning that turmeric supplements may contain bromelain, a compound which is known to boost the anti-inflammatory effects.

Due to its ability to reduce inflammation, which is actually often the underlying cause of low back pain, turmeric has been long used in Ayurveda to treat arthritis. It has been used in traditional medicine in Asia as well, as had been scientifically shown that turmeric extract helps relieve nerve-related pain.

Turmeric Better Than NSAIDs

Turmeric works as selective COX-2 inhibitor. Both COX-1 and COX-2 are enzymes that initiate inflammatory process. The first one is considered to be good as it performs a “housekeeping role” around inflammation while the latter is responsible for greater inflammation.

Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSADs), including naproxen, ibuprofen, and aspirin are not selective and inhibit both of the aforementioned enzymes while turmeric targets COX-2 only.

Drug companies have been trying to create selective COX-2 over the last decade, but why take a medication when something as simple as turmeric provides the same effect? It`s far cheaper and far safer, too.

Consuming Only A Pinch Of Turmeric Is The Same As Exercising For An Hour

You can get the same health benefits from turmeric as from exercising. Turmeric can benefit the cardiovascular system.

Even though the medical experts are not interested in the effects of turmeric, many studies prove that turmeric is extremely effective in the prevention of heart disease.

Turmeric reduces the chance of a heart attack after a bypass surgery by half. Moreover, the polyphenol in turmeric called curcumin improves the vascular function as aerobic exercises.

A study was carried out on 32 women in post menopause. They were divided in three groups: women who consumed curcumin, women who exercised and those who have not done any kind of treatment.

The researchers assessed the elasticity, function and health of the vessels with an ultrasound. They assessed the lining or endothelium of the blood vessels since if the function of the endothelium is affected the chances of atherosclerosis increase.

The women in the curcumin group received 150 milligrams of turmeric extract daily. They also had not made any changes in their lifestyle or diet.

In the exercise group, the women did aerobic exercises 3 times per week, and were also involved in walking and cycling. The intensity of the exercises progressed with time.

The study was over after 8 weeks. The result showed that both exercising and consuming turmeric increases the flow-mediated dilation. So, the researchers concluded that both of these methods are effective in improving the health and the function of the blood vessels.

Further information about turmeric and exercising

This study will certainly motivate a lot of people to add turmeric into their diet or to take curcumin supplements. Turmeric or curcumin is in fact effective against 600 health conditions. However, exercises should be never completely replaced with curcumin supplement or turmeric consumption.

Exercising is essential for protection against many diseases. The best choice for any person is to consume turmeric and exercise regularly. This will certainly bring a lot of health benefits. Even the study does not advise against doing exercises, while consuming curcumin supplements or turmeric.

In fact, there is a study which explored the effect of both curcumin and exercise in improving the tolerance of stress by the heart muscle in postmenopausal women. The results showed that exercises in combination with curcumin reduce the left ventricular afterload.

Left ventricular afterload causes hypertrophy of that part of the heart, aortic valve diseases and high blood pressure. This study confirms that combing curcumin or turmeric and exercising is very beneficial.

You can reduce inflammation and pain from exercising with consuming turmeric as well. So, combine these two methods and enjoy the benefits.

Eat Half a Teaspoon of Turmeric Every Day And These 10 Things Will Happen To Your Body

Turmeric is all the rage these days and for a very food reason! Besides being delicious, it also helps maintain a healthy weight and thus a healthy body, too.

This spice is simple to grow, which makes it even more accessible than pharmaceutical drugs.  As little as half a teaspoon of turmeric daily works wonders for your health! To learn more about its benefits, read on.

1. Fights Inflammation

It is already a well-known fact that inflammation is body`s natural response to heat, toxins, trauma, or bacteria.  Cells damaged by either of these factors release bradykinin, prostaglandins, and histamine, all of which cause swelling.

According to an article in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine , “Curcumin has been demonstrated to be safe in six human trials and has demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity.”  Research shows that its anti-inflammatory properties are attributed to its ability to inhibit inflammatory molecules.

2. Boosts Antioxidant Power

Curcumin is a potent antioxidant which helps neutralize free radicals and combat oxidative stress, which is important for detoxification.  In addition to this, curcumin boosts body`s own antioxidant power, too.

3. Improves Brain Function

The body produces Brain-Derived Neuropathic Factor (BDNF), a hormone which has critical role in division and multiplication of neurons.  The production of this hormone decreases with age and stress, but turmeric reverses this decline, improving memory and boosting brain capacity.

4. Fights Brain Disease

Low levels of BDNF are linked to various diseases, such as Parkinson`s disease, Alzheimer`s disease, and Huntington`s disease.  As already discussed earlier, turmeric boosts BDNF, which in turn protects against brain disease.

5. Lowers Risk of Heart Disease

Heart disease is related to endothelium, the health of the blood vessel lining.  This lining loses its elasticity when exposed to oxidative stress and elasticity, which in turn leads to serious health issues.

Turmeric works wonders when it comes to preventing heart disease and its effects are similar to the ones that the drug atorvastatin provides.

6. Prevents Alzheimer`s Disease

Alzheimer`s disease is associated with the formation of amyloid plaques, which are “believed to cause the loss of cholinergic neurons in the basal forebrain of patients with Alzheimer’s disease,” as concluded by researchers at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Turmeric clears up these plaques and thus helps treat Alzheimer`s disease.

7. Fights Chronic Disease

Short-term is critical to prevent and fight disease while long-term inflammation is highly detrimental and may cause fatal diseases.

Turmeric has the ability to reduce inflammation, which in turn prevents and alleviates symptoms of chronic diseases.

8. Helps Treat Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition which causes inflammation of the joints.  Turmeric reduces inflammation, which in turn alleviates pain and helps regain mobility. The best thing about using turmeric is that it doesn’t cause any side-effects and is completely safe to use.

9. Prevents Cancer

Turmeric blocks the metastasis of tumor cells through suppression of NF-kB and STAT3 pathways, ably preventing cancers of the digestive system.  Whole turmeric is superior to curcumin, its active compound.

10. Treats Depression

Most drugs used to treat depression are associated with severe side-effects such as suicidal thoughts and other psychotic disorders.

On the other hand, turmeric positively affects mental health, while working even better than Prozac and other anti-depressant.  It s highly versatile and it can be used as a herbal tea or added to spice mixes.

This is how your brain physically changes when you consume whole turmeric

Turmeric is regarded as miraculous spice whose positive effects on the body are backed up by more than 600 health benefits.  This is mostly due to its active compound called curcumin, which has a wide plethora of health benefits and healing properties.  But, did you know that whole turmeric can help with brain regeneration? What`s more, this ability doesn’t attribute to curcumin!

Benefits of Turmeric

  • It offers strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Curcumin inhibits the molecules known to play a role in inflammation and it neutralizes free radicals
  • It increases the levels of the brain hormone BDNF, which in turn stimulates the growth of new neurons and combats degenerative processes in the brain
  • It lowers the risk of heart disease by improving a few risk factors for heart disease
  • It helps prevent and treat cancer
  • It boosts the levels of neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, fighting off depression
  • It delays aging and combats age-related conditions

An Overlooked Benefit

Aromatic-turmerone is a fat-soluble compound found in turmeric, which is often overlooked. German researchers have thoroughly studied its effects on neural stem cells and what they found was that the number of neutral stem cells increased by 80 percent when exposed to aromatic-turmerone. In other words, a healing effect was happening. When used on rats, they created healthy new brain cells and noticed a size growth in both subventricular zone and the hippocampus.

Ar-turmerone is a potent regenerative which can aid NSCs in brain regeneration and it is believed to help in cases of degenerative diseases like Alzheimer`s or stroke. Apart from promoting stem cell proliferation, it also distinguishes between stems cells and neurons, which is the main goal of regenerative medicine. On the other hand, curcumin has been found to boost the overall memory of Alzheimer`s patients.

So What does this mean?

While many people believe that using a curcumin extract is enough to gain is benefits, using the whole turmeric offers many healing properties which may be missing out on. For example, in the case of polyps or colonic inflammation, using the whole plant instead of an extract is much better since the extract can be absorbed by the small intestine before reaching the large intestine.

Although the effects of ar-turmerone are still not fully understood, this recent study shows that there is a regenerative factor within.  Healing plants are consist of many beneficial compounds, so assuming which one contributes the most to the healing power of the plant is inaccurate. Both curcumin and ar-turmerone are found to have health benefits to the body, to get the most of this plant make sure you use turmeric as a whole.

This is What Happens to Your Liver and Brain When You Eat ½ TSP of Turmeric Every Day

Turmeric, one of the most popular spices, is a highly versatile ingredient and it is thus used in many different dishes, especially the South Asian ones. Due to the fact that its beneficial properties are also already well-known, it is also used as a natural supplement to treat various health issues. However, few people know that regular consumption of turmeric beneficially affects both the brain and liver too.  Keep reading for more in-depth information.

Turmeric For Brain Health

As mentioned above, turmeric`s ability to treat physical ailments has been known for a long time. However, until recently, its mental benefits have been less known.

Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, is believed to be a promising treatment for Alzheimer`s disease.  It is believed that one of the main causes of Alzheimer`s is the plaque that builds up in the brain, called beta-amyloid plaques. Interestingly, it has been scientifically shown that curcumin has the ability to inhibit the build-up of this plaque by up to 40 percent, which in turn makes it quite promising treatment for Alzheimer`s disease.

Additionally, the researchers have found that the anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin play a critical role in Alzheimer`s treatment, as it reduces damage caused by oxidizing agents and inflammation.

Liver Function And Cancer Prevention

Promoting liver health is another less-known benefit of turmeric. Namely, curcumin has been used to treat liver diseases for over hundreds of years. However, not until recently has a legitimate scientific research on its effects been conducted.

According to the researchers, what makes curcumin beneficial to liver health are its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. It has been scientifically shown that curcumin has the ability to reduce liver damage caused by the following culprits:

–          Iron overdose
–          High toxicity levels
–          Cirrhosis
–          Ethanol ( the type of alcohol you drink)
–          Liver disease ( such as cholestasis)

In addition to this, it has been found that curcumin is able to reduce the risk of developing liver cancer by reducing the human carcinogens on the liver, such as thioacetamide.

How To Get The Most Out Of It

When taken raw, only 1 percent of the curcumin is actually absorbed by the body. In order to get the most of it, the best would be to use high-quality organic turmeric extract with 95 percent curcuminoids. However, this doesn’t mean that turmeric doesn’t do anything if you consume it daily.  The extract is recommended for emergency situations while a ¼ tsp of turmeric of a daily basis is enough to reduce inflammation and prevent diseases.
A good way to get the recommended dosage of curcumin for the day is to boil water and add ¼ tsp turmeric. By doing so, you have actually created a 12 percent solution.
Combining turmeric with some oil or fat is another good way to eat it, as the combination of turmeric and fats significantly increases its bioavailability. For instance, you can blend 1-2 egg yolks with a teaspoon of coconut oil and a tablespoon of turmeric. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you have to combine turmeric with eggs in order to get the most of it. Given the fact that most recipes contain fat, you can add turmeric to a soup, curry, or any other recipe to your preference.
