Ginger is Great BUT Here’s How to Make it EVEN BETTER!

Ginger is known for its specific flavor and is widely used in Indian, Asian, and Caribbean cuisine. However, apart from being a delicious addition to both savory and sweet dishes,  ginger also provides various health benefits, from promoting digestive health to reducing inflammation.

When it comes to cooking, ginger can be used in both fresh and dried form. But, when it comes to reaping its health benefits, most people wonder which form is the best one to use.

As mentioned in the very beginning, ginger provides a wide variety of health benefits.  For instance, ginger tea relieves indigestion and effectively treats nausea and vomiting,   ginger compress or infusion helps relieve joint pain and asthma, and herbal tea made of ginger and turmeric relieves bloating, gas, and pain.

This article looks at both fresh and dried form of ginger and which one is better to use as well as what science says about the effects of heating on ginger`s properties.

The Health Benefits of Ginger

Ginger is member of the same family as cardamom and turmeric do and is mostly cultivated in Australia, India, Africa, and South-East Asia. The flesh of ginger root is typically yellow and has peppery flavor.

Zinqiberene, the main compound of ginger, contains gingerols, out of which 6-gingerol is the most pungent. It is related to piperine and capsaicin, the ones that give black pepper and chilli their hot taste.

According to studies done on ginger, gingerols are not the only compounds in ginger containing medicial properties.  For instance, according to a study published in the International Journal of Physiology, Pathophysiology, and Pharmacology, ginger acts as anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory agent, ably preventing and treating various diseases.

Specifically, ginger has the ability to prevent and treat various inflammatory diseases, such as swelling, joint pain, arthritis, and stomach ulcers.  It protects against fungal and bacterial infections as well, such as  E. coli and Salmonella typhi, and Candida Albicans strains.

How Cooking and Heat Affect Antioxidant Properties of Ginger

It is a well-known fact that cooking alters the chemical components of most foods, including ginger. The active component of raw ginger is 6-gingerol, whole heating or steaming this herb alters its composition, leading to formation of other compounds.

According to a study published in the International Journal of Ayurvedic and Herbal Medicine, boiling reduces ginger`s antioxidant levels while roasting has no notable effect.

Interestingly, separate study on the topic found that boiling or roasting which lasts no more than 6 minutes actually increases the antioxidant levels of 6-gingerol. But, after 8 minutes, a notable decrease was noted during the study.  Therefore, boiling or roasting ginger for up to 6 minutes actually has higher antioxidant levels than ginger in its raw form.

Is Fresh Ginger Better than Dried Ground Ginger?

The increase in 6-gingerol antioxidants was the not only change noted when ginger is heated.  As a matter of fact, it has been found that drying ginger leads to formation of new compounds, which are even more potent than those found in fresh ginger. One of those compounds is 6-shagaol.

The journal Phytochemistry revealed information regarding a study showing that gingerol compounds turn into shagaols when exposed to heat.  This is what gives dried ginger its strong smell and taste. According to this study, gingerols and shagaols have potent anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties.  It was also found that the highest concentration of 6-shagaol was obtained when ginger was dried at 80°C.

It has been scientifically shown that shagaols are more powerful when compared to all the other ginger compounds. As reported by the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, 6-shagaol was superior to other ginger compounds in terms of their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which accounts for the use of dry ginger for medicinal purposes.

This means that there is no need to worry about the potential loss of medicinal properties in dried ginger, as mounting evidence suggests that dried ginger is actually far more potent.

The Anti Cancer Properties of 6-Shagaol

According to a recent research done on 6-shagaol, it has potent anti-cancer properties. For instance, according to an article by American Association for Cancer Research, 6-shagaol,“has a combination of activity, low toxicity, and biochemical properties that makes it of potential utility as a naturally occurring chemopreventive and/or therapeutic agent in prostate cancer”.

A study published by the British Journal of Pharmacology found that 6-shogaol inhibits the spread of various cancer types, particularly when it comes to breast cancer.

The aim of these studies is to demonstrate the powerful activity of ginger extract and its antioxidant compounds. Although further research needs to be done, these results seem promising.

How to Make Ginger Water to Treat Migraines, Heartburn, Joint and Muscle Pain

Flavored waters have become all the rage- and for good reason.  Besides being important for proper hydration and removing toxins from the system, adding a few natural ingredients makes water a powerful healing tool.

The options are limitless: you can add blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, herbs like lavender and mint, and even veggies like cucumber.

However, if you are looking for real power drink, consider adding some ginger.  This spice adds specific taste and provides numerous health benefits.

The Power of Ginger Water

Ginger is well-known for its potent effects on gastrointestinal issues. Being a carminative, it helps eliminate intestinal gas and treat heartburn, nausea, and vomiting. What`s more, it is also found to be intestinal spasmolytic, which means that it helps soothe and relax the intestinal tract.

However, ginger is not a remedy for stomach issues only! It has been also found to relieve migraines. According to a research, ginger works similarly to sumatriptan, a popular prescription drug which constricts blood vessels and inhibits the pain pathways in the brain.

Although drugs often provide immediate relief, in 40% of people the headache will return within 24 hours.  Additionally, triptans cause side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, muscle weakness, nausea, and serious issues like stroke, heart attacks, artery spasms, and even seizures.

In a double blind study, one group of people received 250 grams of dried ginger, while another group received 50mg of sumatriptan. It has been found that ginger was as effective as the drug, providing relief to staggering 90% of people within two hours.

Anti-Inflammatory Spice

Ginger`s ability to prevent the formation of inflammatory compounds and treat inflammation in tissues, muscles and joints is one of its best properties. As reported by Green Med Info, there are over 800 studies on the healing properties of ginger, 275 of which are related to its anti-inflammatory properties.

Gingerol, a chemical similar to piperine and capsaicin (the compounds that give black pepper and chill peppers their spiciness) is the one responsible for ginger`s anti-inflammatory properties.

According to two studies involving two groups of people, 75% of arthritis patients and 100% of people with muscular pain experienced relief from pain when using ginger.

Researchers at the University of Miami believe that ginger will eventually replace NSAIDs due to its potency and effectiveness. What`s more, ginger doesn’t cause any side effects which are typical for NSAIDs as it works on cellular level.

Ginger contains essential vitamins, such as A, C, E and beta-carotene, as well as B vitamins like pyridoxine (vitamin B-6) and pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5). It is an excellent source of copper, iron, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, manganese, and calcium.  Ultimately, it contains over 50 antioxidants which fight off free radicals, which in turn boosts immunity and prevents various diseases.

How to Lose Weight and Belly Fat With Ginger

Ginger is an aromatic and pungent herb which adds flavor to many fruit and vegetable dishes. However, apart from being used for culinary purposes, ginger is widely used to address certain health conditions, too.

It has an exceptional nutritional profile and offers a wide range of health benefits.  As little as one tablespoon of ginger provides 0.11 g protein, 0.12 g dietary fiber, and solid amount of vitamin B6. It also possesses therapeutic properly, such as direct anti-inflammatory effects and antioxidant properties.

With this being said, it`s no wonder that ginger root helps prevent and treat various health ailments. For instance, it is effective in eliminating gastrointestinal distress and alleviating symptoms of motion sickness, it helps relieve nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, it alleviates arthritis- related problems, protects against colorectal cancer, causes cell death in ovarian cancer cells, boosts immunity, and many more.

In addition to this, Ayurvedic medicine even suggests that consuming ginger root can help keep weight in check, and this presumption has been recently backed up by science.  According to a 2014 study published in the Journal of Science and Food Farming, overweight rats that were given gingerol, a substance found in ginger, managed to effectively lose weight within 30-day supplementation period.  What`s more, the rats exhibited an improvement in their leptin and sugar levels, too. Leptin, also known as the “fat hormone”, is a hormone that inhibits hunger and thus helps regulate energy balance.  Simply put, it plays a critical role in appetite and weight control.

The researchers found that supplementing with ginger helps resolve weight-related problems caused by high-fat diet.  Ginger was also found to have the potential to treat obesity and complications associated with the disease.

Another study, published in 2013 in the European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences,  has found that ginger supplementation had the same effect on rat`s weight loss as Orlistat, a popular weight-loss drug.  In addition to this, ginger also increased HDL cholesterol and improved the overall blood cholesterol levels.  Taking into consideration its ability to help you feel full and digest food properly, it`s no wonder it has such as positive impact on weight reduction.

How Ginger Helps Blast Belly Fat

Apart from its ability to help keep weight under control, ginger also keeps the formation of belly fat at bay. Its secret lies in its capability to target the key reasons for accumulation of belly fat, such as overeating, hormonal imbalance, and low energy.

As already discussed earlier, ginger offers a sense of fullness, so regular consumption of ginger root helps you avoid the urge to overeat.

Hormonal changes and chronic stress are the most common causes of spikes in cortisol levels, which in turn causes damage to the metabolism and the immune system.  According to a 2004 study published in the Biological and Pharmaceutical Publication, ginger inhibits the production/ release of cortisol.

Increased cortisol levels may contribute to weight gain, making it difficult to blast the stubborn belly fat. This is why resetting the hormones is one of the first steps towards a successful weight-loss process.

  • Reheat the water if it cools down during the treatment, but make sure it doesn’t boil
  • Fresh ginger is more effective than powdered ginger
  • This treatment should not be used on babies, pregnant women, in case of cancerous tumors, and fever

Don’t Use Ginger If You Have Any of These Conditions!

At this point virtually anyone who is a little health-conscious is familiar with the many health benefits of the miraculous ginger! However, not everyone knows that this simple herb has the ability to prevent a wide plethora of health conditions.

Some of the most outstanding benefits of ginger include offering anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties; alleviating morning, motion sickness, nausea, and chemotherapy-related nausea; reducing muscle pain and soothing muscle soreness;  relieving the symptoms of osteoarthritis; lowering blood sugar levels and improving heart disease risk factors in diabetics; treating indigestion; reducing menstrual pain; regulating cholesterol levels; improving brain function, and many more.

Most of its health benefits are attributed to the potent bioactive compounds and nutrients it contains.  It is most known for its ability to alleviate various digestive disorders.  It possesses powerful enzymes that assist in digestion, breaking down food, and detoxification of the entire body.

However, regardless of its robust nutritional profile and a wide array of health benefits, ginger shouldn’t be consumed in certain instances. They are as follows:

1. Blood Disorders

Ginger is extremely useful in the treatment of obesity, diabetes, Raynaud`s disease, and peripheral artery disease, mostly due to its ability to stimulate blood circulation. However, this particular ability is unfavorable for people with hemophilia.  Due to their condition their blood has diminished ability to clot, meaning that even the most insignificant injury could be fatal.

2. Pregnancy

Ginger is packed with stimulants that improve digestion and promote muscle health. However, consuming it during pregnancy is likely to cause premature contraction and labor. Doctors are strongly against ginger consumption during the last trimester of pregnancy. In addition to this, ginger interferes with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and iron.  While it may help you alleviate morning sickness, it is recommended to consult a doctor prior using it.

3. Certain Medications

Those who are taking medications for hypertension or diabetes should stay away from ginger at all costs as the combination of ginger and insulin, anticoagulants, or beta-blockers may change the effects of these drugs.  Since ginger has the ability to lower blood pressure and thin the blood,  it lowers the effects of these drugs.

4. Underweight

Underweight individuals should avoid ginger and its supplements as they contain high quantities of fiber and increase the production of digestive enzymes as well as the pH level of the stomach.  Consequently, this leads to burning fat and reduced appetite.  Needless to say, this leads to problems like hair loss, poor muscle mass, weight loss, and menstrual irregularities.

What Is a Good Substitute for Ginger?

If you have any of the issues above, you need to swap ginger for ingredients whch are safer for your particular case. Good choices include red paprika, cayenne pepper, and sweet peppers.

According to Milka Raicevic, an eminent nutritionist, peppers provide similar effects to those that ginger offers. Therefore, if you are fond of spicy foods, opt for red paprika. If you are not fan of spicy flavors, choose sweet peppers. Both of them are quite versatile and can be added to lemonade or other good-for-you beverages.

Despite the fact that there is enough scientific evidence to support these benefits, there is mounting evidence for additional benefits which vary from curing a hangover to enhancing the function of the respiratory system.

While ginger is famous for being a sort of cure-all, it is the most popular for its ability to treat arthritis, particularly rheumatoid arthritis.

The powerful anti-inflammatory properties of ginger have been thorough studies and many scientists have compared their effectiveness to that of ibuprofen, celecoxib, and other pharmaceutical products.

It has been found that ginger is actually superior to pharmaceuticals in regard to relieving arthritis pain. As explained, ginger suppresses the inflammation-causing molecules called leukotrienes, which in turn shuts down the inflammatory genes.  This makes ginger more effective than painkillers used for arthritis; since they only block the enzymes which cause pain whilst ginger fixes the underlying problem.

Additionally, painkillers are accompanied with a wide range of side effects, such as allergic reactions, hypertension, kidney damage, gastrointestinal problems, and heart problems. On the other hand, ginger is completely safe to use.

According to a 2012 study,  Eurovita Extract 77, a specific ginger extract, reduced inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis cells as efficiently as steroids. It has been also shown to alleviate pain during walking and standing.

Researchers suggest taking 255 mg of Eurovita Extract 77 two times a day or simply drink 4 cups of ginger tea on a daily basis. Here is how to make it!
